Averna Amaro is one of my favorite spirits. Oddly enough I like to drink it on the rocks when I’m relaxing or playing Bocce in Livermore.
Amaro is an Italian herbal liqeur with sweet and bitter notes to it. The literal translation of “Amaro” from Italian to English means “bitter”.
It is made by macerating herbs, roots, flowers, bark and citrus peels. It is added to either a neutral spirit, wine or a syrup and then is aged in casks or bottles.
Some of the ingredients that may be included in the maceration are: gentian, angelica root, cinchona, lemon balm, lemon verbena, juniper, anise, fennel, zedoary, ginger, mint, thyme, sage, bay laurel, citrus peels, licorice, cinnamon, menthol, cardamom, saffron, wormwood and elder.
